Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
